A Comforting Euphemism

Today's Herald-Leader printed three letters to the editor about Lee Todd and the university. The first one, by David Baynham, "UK Mistreating Faculty & Staff in its Cutbacks," highlights how UK has been eliminating jobs on one hand and on the other proclaiming "there haven't been firings at UK because of the budget."

Baynham goes on to say, "I'm sure everything Todd describes as accomplishments is accurate. What Todd omits is how UK is treating faculty and staff — the very people he extols for dedication, gallant efforts and determination, and refusal 'to use a troubled period' as an excuse to relinquish leadership.

"Too bad Todd and his cabinet don't hold themselves to the same high commitment."

How many people do you know who've lost their job due to these non-firings? What reason were they given?

It's always been like this. I remember a woman named Karen Wilmont was going to retire last year....suddenly she accounces she's going to stay at UK. Checked her salary online and she's making about 30K more a year. Her only job is follow Doyle around and tell him that everything he says is absolutely brillent. Go figure. Those at the top will eliminate as many jobs as they have to in order to protect themselves.

I hear that President Todd doesn't even live at the UK house, and hasn't for a while. UK maintains the property and then pays for his house off campus. Talk about a waste....

To the question:

I know three persons who were fired/laid off due to "budgetary" problems last year. All three are ladies of not-yet-retirement age. But two were replaced by younger people on higher salaries...

Baynham states that he believes Lee Todd is not fudging when he quotes some accomplishments... Why do we need to show our belief in Todd's integrity? We can hope against hope that UK is "Number 30" as Todd claims, but no credible ranking ever placed us above Number 53 among public research universities... Let's stop fooling ourselves about Todd.

In general, let's stop using the word UK when we mean UK Administration. These two are not the same. WE are UK: employees, students, alumni. THEY are the Administration: the kiss up, kick down clique that rules over our institution. Big difference.

I agree that it is the UK Administration and not UK itself that is the problem. The Corporate Model that Dr. Todd brought to UK is and will continue to me a miserable falure to all but a few. Top 20 get real, not in my lifetime or yours. The Legislature and the people of Ky have been sold a snow job by a UK Marketing group that does a Top 20 job.
